First of all, the words. Nobody every uses em right. Right? Slum is not an adjective used to diss, put down, or cheapen this particular Ironman. The word slum is only used to describe mechanical and function efficiency. It’s slum as a fuck. The word Ironman is a cheap ripoff of the hero character. Pretty straight forward. Iron is slang for heater, which is slang for toaster, which is slang for strap, which well, it’s a pistol. Make and model don’t necessarily matter. Rust is common. They’re often bartered or trashed as needed. Very replaceable. If a silencer is equipped its normally a potato. “Stark’s starch”.

Slum Ironman, aka S.I., isn’t a hero like the real Ironman. SI isn’t really a bad guy either. SI plays the fence at all times and only moves when it’s profitable or some extenuating circumstances promote action. SI is based on real people. Not just one person ‘wears the mask’. The origin story is more a collection of details and information. The chronological adventures of slum Ironman are for later.

Rumor is the very first Slum Ironman lived in a project in New Jersey. There, he was the first to invent phone book/magazine body armor. He used both Duct tape and a flame retardant packing tape to make the various pieces. With this suit, he survived a rival’s attempt to both assassinate him and take over his spot. He also wore the suit when taking revenge on the same enemy, however he altered it to maximize maneuverability beforehand. The suit itself managed to stop a 9mm ricochet as well as a shot from a .22 pistol. The armors best work came in mitigating damage from a knife attack. At one point SI was tackled to the ground and a knife only managed to damage the chest plate and make some minor flesh wounds.

As this iteration of SI wore his armor around his spot, he customized it by taping all around the front phone book with duct tape. He left one area on the side of the taped up book slightly hollowed out enough to hold a small shank.

The design was a main front chest plate made of 1 phone book duct taped around. The rear chest plate (it attached) is another phone book. Both are oriented vertically. The top portion of the chest plate was made of 5 magazines. Going from the front to the back, the 1st magazine was vertically oriented and overlapped (attached) with the front phone book. Magazines 2, 3, &4 were folded togethed, taped, and oriented horizontally behind the first magazine. The 5th magazine was again vertically oriented and connected to the lower part. The back piece had 7 total magazines of various shapes and sizes taped together. The straps connecting the front and back were made from many long pieces of duct tape. The adhesive sections are mostly covered by other tape, and any showing adhesive collected dust, strings, etc. The design was two shoulder straps. The lower sections were tied to fit using a shoestring. A small groove was made in the back to prevent the string from sliding.

There were obvious gaps in the sides of the first version of this now famous armor. Each shoulder carried about 3/4 of a phone book. The phone books were made wet, then were put on the shoulders of SI, molding them to fit. As they dried on him, tape was applied with the intent to help retain its form. The tape layers on the shoulder pads slowly increased as SI wore the armor he would periodically add layers, padding, etc. ultimately, pennies were incorporated into two layers of tape. (This was also the first use of pennies and tape as an armor suit. That’s a different story. ) The design was heavy on tape at first, and its later iterations used tape for padding and incorporated more protection from coins throughout the design- both taped into pages of the magazines and books, as well as into the layers of the shoulder guards. The coins added obvious weight, but SI did not find it restrictive. He recommended that his predecessor performs his exercise regimen wearing his suit of armor to get used to the weight.

This version of SI commonly fought with a crowbar, a revolver, and an assortment of shanks. He also used shotguns, but generally only in rooms that used them as a defensive feature. His style would be considered stealthy. His redevelopment of cheap modern armor spread quickly. He was able to make and sell custom armor suits for many others and was well paid for a few years afterwards. Eventually competition made business more difficult and the endeavor ended without incident. The last suit he created was with and for his son, 16 at the time.

Tactically, his timely creation of the armor allowed him to survive a defensive stand that lead to him eventually winning his war.
